how to choose a wedding colour theme/jewellery

Here’s how to create your wedding colour theme – and choose the jewellery to match

The invitations, the dresses, suits, accessories and jewellery, the flowers, the decorations, the cake… Every detail of a wedding needs to be considered and there’s one especially important choice: colour.

Colour theming is a big part of planning any wedding and we hope this little blog helps make the decision more fun!

What’s your wedding colour palette?

Everyone has colours they love and that look great when they wear them. Your wedding is the time to explore those favourites. Which colours are most flattering for your skin tone? What colours does your partner prefer to wear? This is your wedding, so you both want to look and feel great.

It’s a good idea to create a wedding palette of three complementary colours, one darker colour with two different colours in lighter hues. For example, a ‘classic’ theme is black, champagne and white, or a ‘vintage’ theme is turquoise, blush pink and gold. The three colours of your palette can be shown in all the details of the wedding: the jewellery, the attire of the bridal party and groomsmen, the flowers, cake, decorations and table settings.

You may also want to consider choosing at least one hue in the colour palette that’s more universally flattering for everyone in the wedding party – a medium shade like soft blue or even darker colours such as red or aubergine. After all, you’ll all be standing together in lots of photos on the day, so this is a way to make sure everyone looks great.

The venue where the wedding will be held is an important element in choosing your colour theme. Think about the building, church, temple, the pavilion or grounds – what colours or styles are already there, what can or can’t you change or decorate? You can work with what’s already there to make your colour palette look cohesive with the space where you’ll be celebrating.

What’s your wedding style?

Most couples have an idea of what style of wedding they’d like to have. Whether it’s an elegant, modern celebration with an urban feel, or a romantic, rustic look, or a time-period themed wedding like the 1920s, the colours you choose really help to capture the style. Light blue, black and white look great for a modern wedding, while lavender, plum and a soft green help create a romantic, bohemian look.

The jewellery worn by the bride, bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and groom, and flower girls is an important part of the colour theme too. Necklaces, earrings and bracelets can be co-ordinated or matching to give a beautiful aesthetic or to fit with your time-period style.

Quick tip: When it comes to colour-theming wedding jewellery, there are two elements to consider, one is the colour of the metal, the other is the colour of the stones used in the jewellery design. What works best with your colour palette – yellow gold (also known as simply gold), rose gold or white gold? And consider how the bold or subtle accents of your colour theme can be brought out in the stones – sparkling emerald-like gems, classic diamonds, or dreamy pink crystals.

Explore your wedding style with jewellery

Wedding-day jewellery gives the bride a unique way to tell her story through colours and hues: is the wedding theme boldly romantic, with rich red and pure white, set off with a sparkling diamond-look like Splinters of Stars? Or your chosen colour theme might look great with a gleam of seduction with blood-red garnets

Bridesmaids’ jewellery really brings your colour theme to life. Each bridesmaid will be wearing some accessories, whether that’s a simple necklace, or earrings and matching bracelet as well. For a sweetly romantic wedding, think creamy white and rosy pink stones for the necklaces and earrings.

Flower girls’ jewellery is important too, these little ladies are in the spotlight in a big way! Different shapes – round, teardrop, heart-shape – and sizes, lets you pull together the right aesthetic for the wedding day. For example, a tear-drop shape could be echoed in the floral arrangements, or the heart motif repeated on the cake decoration. The possibilities are (almost!) endless.

Jewellery makes the ideal gift for the mother of the bride or groom and the bridesmaid’s party – giving each of these special women a memento of the day they’re helping make a joyful and successful celebration.
